This guide will help you navigate local dog rules, find pet-friendly spaces, and make the most of your trip with your dog by your side.

Know the Local Dog Rules Before You Go

When visiting Papamoa with your dog, it's important to familiarise yourself with the local dog regulations to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip for both you and your pup. Fortunately, Papamoa is a dog-friendly destination (restrictions apply), with plenty of areas where dogs are welcome to roam and enjoy the outdoors. More information can be found here.

Leash and Off-Leash Zones

While Papamoa Beach is dog-friendly, there are specific areas where dogs must be kept on a leash and other areas where they can roam freely.

Leash Requirements: Dogs must be on a leash at Papamoa Domain and the foreshore areas near the Papamoa Domain and Omanu Surf Club. Specifically, dogs must be on-leash when transiting the beach and foreshore areas between Omanu Surf Club and Papamoa Domain.
Off-Leash Areas: For more freedom, head to the designated off-leash areas along the beach where your dog can run and play without restrictions. This is perfect for letting your dog enjoy the sand and surf to the fullest.

Local Parks to Exercise Your Dog

Papamoa is home to several parks and reserves where you can take your dog for a walk or a game of fetch, with both on-leash and off-leash areas available.

On-Leash Areas: Make sure your dog is on a leash at all public footpaths, roads, and reserves in Papamoa, including when walking along the Matua Salt Marsh or Papamoa Dune Wilderness Area (between Papamoa Domain and Taylors Road).
Off-Leash Areas: The Tauranga City Council has designated various parks and reserves as off-leash zones where you can let your dog roam free, including Papamoa Beach and other local parks (just look for the clearly marked signs!).

Prohibited Areas

There are certain areas in Papamoa and Tauranga where dogs are not allowed due to ecological concerns or high public use. These include:

Papamoa Hills Park: Dogs are prohibited within the park, which is part of the local council’s efforts to protect the natural environment.
Mount Maunganui Main Beach: Dogs are prohibited on the main beach area from Leisure Island to Mauao.
Pilot Bay: Dogs are prohibited on the foreshore from Mauao to Salisbury Avenue.
Leisure Island and Moturiki Reserve: Dogs are not allowed here due to conservation efforts.

Disability Assist Dogs

If you have a disability assist dog, there are some exceptions. These specially trained dogs can be taken into areas typically prohibited for dogs. This includes parks, reserves, and beaches where assistance dogs are permitted to support individuals with disabilities.
